• 1st Workshop: Environmental Records and Landscape Change

Date: 30th of September, 2026 Time: ~9:00 AM more details will follow

Welcome to the Environmental Records and Landscape Change workshop section. In the framework of the the DEUQUA 2026 conference, we are delighted to have the opporuntiy to host an in-person workshop that aims at bringing people together that work on different archives of climate and environmentall change. In the following, we will briefly guide you through the aims and scopes as well as the structure of the workshop and the outcome that we aim to achive.

    Aims and Scopes

Considering the strengths and weaknesses of environmental archives, it is clear that geoscientists can only get a preferably holistic view on past environmental changes if they combine information from multiple archives. Thus, merging puzzle pieces and perspectives to a much more holistic picture which (i) overcomes the limitations of archives and which (ii) illuminates aspects that could not be addressed before is the major goal of the workshop.

The workshop will focus on the following topics: Glacial Records, Loess-Palaeosol-Sequences, Lake and Peat Records, Speleothem Records, Climate Modelling. However, scientists with different backgrounds are more than welcome to contribute to the discussion and to share their perspectives and ideas for cooperation possibilities. The idea is to specifically search for collaboration opportunties between the communities and to overcome boundaries between them to better deal with record specific weaknesses and to illuminate novel aspects that may arise through joint perspectives.

To foster this, the workshop will have the following structure:

First, we will have a morning session with 20 minutes talks of invited speakers from each of the five topics. The idea is to get a broad overview and to create first ideas on collaboration potentials. For this we invited scientists that are renowned worldwide for their expertise in the respective topics and who aim to share their ideas already with the intention to bring those people together that are working on different archives. The following invited speakers are confirmed to date:

    Dr. Pierre Antoine

    Dr. Patrick Ludwig

    Prof. Dr. Dominik Fleitmann

    Prof. Dr. Achim Brauer

After the lunch break, we will discuss scientific collaboration options and summarise them in outbreak rooms that ideally contain at least one person that deals with each of the mentioned topics (materials for the drafting of summarizing posters / presentations will be provided). The idea is that during the two planned hours of this phase, a base is set for a general discussion (90 minutes).

    Outcome

We intentionally aim to cross the borders between disciplines. This is most promising to provide a considerable added value for a new community to form, but also as a pulse provider for other scientists that are welcome to join and/or to collaborate. As a clear outcome, we plan a special issue that provides a synthesis of climate and environmental change in central Europe (and adjacent areas) from 60,000 to 11,700 years to compare different archives and time-slices. Thereby, the focus will not be the last glacial maximum at ~24,000 years).

The workshop will be convened by Mathias Vinnepand and Martin Hofmann

2nd Workshop: Meet the Editor (Early Career Researchers)

Date: 1st of October, 2026 Time: ~1:00 PM more details will follow

    Meet the Editor

Starting a career in science can be challenging as there are plenty of new impressions and there is so much to learn. A key aspect is to know how one can publish scientific results and to get into grips concerning the underyling mechanisms and steps involved. This workshop brings together Early Career Researchers with more experienced ones who are already engaged as editors and who therefore can provide valuable hints and insights considering the production of papers.

The idea is to talk about the publishing process, but please feel free to address also other questions about the scientific world that are important for you. We will have the occassion to discuss these topics whilst we are having snacks and supplies (also vegan and vegetarian options) together.

Looking forwards to meeting you! The DEUQUA 2026 orga-team
